Why New Roads and Flyovers Matter in Kigali

Kigali is growing fast. Every day, more people live in the city and more cars fill the roads. Sometimes traffic becomes too heavy and people lose hours on the way to work or school. To fix this, Kigali is building new roads and flyovers. These help cars move faster and make the city look clean and modern.

Kigali wants to be a modern African capital ,safe, smart, and green. New roads are a big part of that dream. They also help connect people in places like Remera, Kicukiro, and Gishushu.

Kigali Road Projects: Big Changes Ahead

Upgrading Main Junctions like Chez Lando, Gishushu, and Kicukiro/Sonatubes

The Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA) is leading major projects to upgrade busy areas like Chez Lando, Gishushu, and Kicukiro/Sonatubes.

At Chez Lando, there will be an underpass to make traffic flow easily to Kigali International Airport. At Gishushu, engineers are building a flyover bridge to reduce long lines of cars. These projects make travel smoother and safer for everyone.

 Road Expansion from Prince House–Giporoso–Masaka

Another major project is the Prince House–Giporoso–Masaka road expansion. The road is being widened from two lanes to four lanes, and a new 1.2 km flyover will make it easier to reach the airport and Masaka dry port.

This expansion will help traders, drivers, and families travel quickly across Kigali without long delays.

 Roads Changing Lives in Kigali

 1: Remera and Nyagatovu Roads

In Remera and Kimironko, roads are now being paved and improved. The Nyagatovu and Nyabisindu roads are getting drainage, sidewalks, and lights. These small projects make big changes — children walk to school safely and buses reach on time.

2: 100 Kilometres of Neighbourhood Roads

The City of Kigali also plans to build 100 kilometres of neighbourhood roads by 2029. These are smaller roads inside communities like Kabeza, Kinyinya, and Gahanga. When done, people can move easily to markets and schools.

Challenges and What is Needed

Even though progress is big, some projects still face delays.

  • Funding: Some road works wait for enough money to continue.
  • Studies: Projects like the Kigali–Muhanga road need extra research before building.
  • Expropriation: Some families must move to make space for construction, and it takes time to pay them fairly.
