Record-Breaking Economic Impact

Rwanda's travel and tourism sector contributed a staggering Fr1.9 trillion to the national economy in 2024, accounting for 9.8% of the total GDP. This represents a 17.7% increase over the previous peak in 2019, highlighting the sector's resilience and growth.

Significant Job Creation

The sector supported nearly 386,000 jobs in 2024, reflecting a robust recovery and expansion. This growth is attributed to the increasing demand for tourism services and the development of new attractions and infrastructure.

Surge in International and Domestic Spending

International visitors spent a record Fr1 trillion in Rwanda in 2024, marking a Fr169 billion increase from 2019. Domestic spending also saw a significant rise, reaching over Fr773 billion, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 32.2%. This indicates a thriving tourism market driven by both international and local visitors.

Infrastructure Developments

       Enhancing Connectivity

Key infrastructure projects, such as the new Bugesera International Airport, are set to further boost Rwanda's tourism sector. Once completed, the airport will have the capacity to handle 14 million passengers annually, enhancing connectivity and attracting more international visitors.

Focus on Conservation and Community Benefits

Rwanda continues to promote a high-value, low-volume tourism model that emphasizes sustainability, conservation, and community benefits. Flagship experiences include eco-tourism initiatives in Akagera and Nyungwe National Parks.

Projected Growth

In 2025, the travel and tourism sector in Rwanda is projected to contribute Fr2.1 trillion to the economy, representing 10.3% of the national GDP. The sector is expected to support over 402,000 jobs, accounting for more than 8% of total employment. Growth is anticipated to be driven by both international and domestic spending, estimated at Fr1.2 trillion and Fr822 billion, respectively.
